Elissa Marchal. Intervalles.
The exhibition
Elissa Marchal has long been pursuing these effects. The Assemblages, begun nearly ten years ago, were made of wooden slats painted blue, green, red or yellow and orange, more rarely pink, arranged orthogonally on top of each other, forming a kind of constructivist grid. Elissa Marchal preferred to show them on the wall as paintings. The Jalousies from 2013 are made of horizontal slats, painted and fixed directly to the wall one below the other horizontally. The colors, painted on the inner sides, operate by diffusing inward between the lines as it were. One more step and there was no more canvas. From 2015, Elissa Marchal indeed proposes empty frames whose interior or exterior uprights are alone colored. The color-light appears in the void of the wall and/or in the outer vicinity of the frame. With the Horizons, the fullness makes its return, without conceptualization, without installation device, without material, without theatricality, with full force.
