Interested in the process of the passage of time and its effects, particularly on memory, Benoît Lefeuvre works with materials that are sensitive to decomposing chemical agents, selecting degraded films containing images of landscapes made by anonymous people. The artist's transformation of these memory media, in particular through a process of burial in earth enriched with mycelium, reveals abstractions evocative of natural or dreamlike landscapes that disturb our perception. In this work, a link is established between the altered photographic medium and the ephemeral landscapes that were photographed, particularly in his earthworks series. Mycelium also inspires his rooted series: here the fungus is grown from hemp shavings to form composite panels on which are laser-engraved vernacular images and forest details, also gleaned from the internet. Using this organic element attached to plant roots, Benoît Lefeuvre resurrects the memory of these forgotten images and reinforces the exploration of memory as an organic process.
