Earth is a material that has always fascinated and inspired artists. It is both the origin and the end. Works created from clay, often with a raw appearance, are all imbued with a kind of mystery, an indescribable character, a magnetic depth. They reveal traces of time, memory and life. Our exhibition, Terres d'artistes, explores these ‘earth stories’ (to use the title of Dubuffet's Matériologie) through works by Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985), Monette Guermont (born 1925), herman de vries (born 1931), Richard Long (born 1945), Carolin Le Mehauté (born 1982) and Benoît Lefeuvre (born 1994). Three generations of artists who, over the years and through their work, have revealed the archaic and pure beauty of the Earth, expressed a desire for fusion between man and nature, and encouraged us to be aware of our shared fragility. Philosopher Gaspard Koenig notes that ‘humanity has long looked to the sky1 “, evoking the need to take a close look at the Earth, ”this infinite other that we do not look at even though we depend on it’. In the age of the Anthropocene, this change of focus is a matter of urgency, and is echoed in the works brought together here.
