British artist Richard Long articulates his work between sculpture, photography and painting.
His manifesto piece, a line made by walking, a photograph of the trace left by his comings and goings in the grass, took the work of art out of the museum and led the artist to develop a different relationship with space, associating walking with sculpture from 1968 onwards. Each walk enabled him to extend the boundaries of sculpture, and he is regarded as a major figure in land art, but refuses to be associated with this movement, considering his own approach more respectful of nature. Long's site-specific works, made from natural materials subject to the vagaries of the climate, are known through photographs. Richard Long's favourite materials are mud and clay, collected during his travels, such as mud from the Avon (the river that runs through Bristol), from the banks of the Mississippi, or clay collected in China, with which he mainly makes murals and gestural compositions.
