The Hôtel-Dieu is the hospital which is at the origin of the Hospices Civils de Beaune.
The history of the Hospices Civils de Beaune began in 1443 with the desire of Nicolas Rolin and Guigone de Salins to build a hospital: the Hôtel-Dieu. Today, the Hospices Civils de Beaune includes the hospitals of Beaune, Arnay-Le-Duc, Seurre and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The originality of this hospital institution lies in the importance of its patrimony, which is made up of a historical monument, the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune, and two prestigious wine-producing estates that exploit the best appellations in Burgundy. Thus, thanks to its exceptional heritage, this hospital institution plays a leading role in the major activities of the region: tourism and wine.

The museum presents the old wards and their functioning with their evolution since 1452 until the 20th century. The Hôtel-Dieu also bears witness to the rich patronage of its founders: Nicolas Rolin and Guigone de Salins, through exceptional works such as the altarpiece of the Last Judgment attributed to Rogier Van der Weyden. Donations made by rich founders and benefactors are also present through the 17th century mural paintings, an impressive collection of tapestries and chests from the 15th to the 17th centuries.
