Moving from one dream to another, or from one traboule to another, is the central theme of the 18th edition of the Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale, where nearly 300,000 visitors are expected. Whilst the arcades of Paris paved the way for the consumer society, these famous passages – so typical of Lyon and associated with the silk trade and workers’ revolts – form the central theme of the exhibitions.
The Biennale’s title, borrowed from the German philosopher Walter Benjamin, embodies the dizzying idea that our societies rest on imaginary, economic and political constructs that shape our relationship with the world. Far from seeking to dispel this collective dream of modernity, Catherine Nichols and Isabelle Bertolotti propose instead to shift its focus, to reveal its mechanisms in order to imagine new ones. These are works that do not shy away from reality, but which put its narratives to the test.
