Pierre Soulages. La rencontre.
The exhibition
The Fabre Museum in Montpellier pays a masterful tribute to Pierre Soulages with an exhibition conceived as a retrospective, the first since his death in 2022. The world's most famous contemporary French painter, Soulages, originally from Rodez, always maintained strong emotional ties with this museum, to which he made his first major donation in 2005. As its title suggests, the exhibition draws parallels between Soulages' work and the friendships and influences that marked his career. Spread over the museum's three floors and six sections, around a hundred works (canvases, works on paper, glass, and copper, etc.) are presented in a cyclical, non-linear approach to the painter's work, based on artistic and technical affinities, echoing his own approach: “It is what I do that teaches me what I am looking for,” he said.
