Copistes
The exhibition
Designed by its curators as ‘an exploration of the act and gesture of copying today,’ the exhibition at the Centre Pompidou-Metz invites 100 contemporary artists of all ages and backgrounds to reactivate the legacy of the Louvre, the last museum in France to have housed a copyists' office since 1793. Defying categories, Donatien Grau, advisor for contemporary programmes at the Louvre Museum, and Chiara Parisi, director of the Centre, illustrate the plurality of this practice – which cannot be considered a form of imitation – from the creative act of confronting the original to the crystallisation of the identity of a new work.
