The exhibition

La Peinture par d'autres moyens, the title of the exhibition at Saint-Étienne's Musée d'Art moderne et contemporain, aptly expresses the creative audacity of Pierrette Bloch (1928-2017). This first retrospective in France explores the artist's adventurous path through nearly 70 years of practice, with two hundred works displayed over 1,000 m². It aims to place Pierrette Bloch at the heart of the most inventive abstraction of the 1960s, within a French scene that too often relegated her to her textile works, then considered a minor art form. Pierrette Bloch's rare work, on the other hand, shines for its obstinacy, rigor and audacity, with its relentless quest for creative protocols. The whole resonates with the quality exhibitions for which the museum is renowned, with recent highlights including Marcelle Cahn, Lionel Sabatté and David Meskhi. This retrospective, which brings together pieces from French and European public and private collections, is also an opportunity to unveil some one hundred previously unseen works by the artist.
