Paul Rebeyrolle - On dit qu'il a la rage
The exhibition
A self-taught artist, Paul Rebeyrolle (1926-2005) never received any formal training or was a pupil of a painter. He developed his practice by drawing inspiration from Rouault, Picasso and Soutine, and spending his afternoons in the Louvre contemplating works by Caravaggio, Delacroix, Goya and Zurbarán.
A rebel and an observer of society, Rebeyrolle saw painting as a vital need, an outlet for his pain and anger: ‘I paint every day and yet I wonder if I don't think as much about life and the living conditions of individuals as I do about painting’, he declared in 1984. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Espace Paul-Rebeyrolle in Eymoutiers is bringing together previously unseen works by the artist.
