Arp mythique, Arp antique
The exhibition
The Fondation Arp in Clamart presents some fifty sculpted, painted and drawn works by Jean Arp, revealing the influence of Greco-Roman antiquity and mythology on the development of his formal language and in his imagination.
What's special about artists' studios turned museums is that they project us not only into a creative space, but also into a creative mind. The Fondation Arp's new exhibition takes us on a journey through the sculptor's own thinking, showing major motifs of his poetic and formal reflection in three main sections - the existence of a Greek pantheon in his work, the reinvention of Hellenistic beauty by exploring the classical forms of torsos or amphorae, and the inspiration drawn from the artifacts and signs of language of extra-European civilizations. It's like seeing Arp in the Louvre, Arp on his Mediterranean travels, Arp reading: the exhibition gives us access to the intimacy of his inner artistic journey.
