L’esprit du geste
The exhibition
“Our tradition is revolutionary, our tradition is futuristic,” said the artist from the Casablanca School Mohamed Chabâa. Thus situating the historical horizon of this exhibition bringing together 17 artists, the curator Sonia Recasens also summons a more intimate memory, forged in childhood while watching the women of her own family at work in Morocco. Reading their daily gestures as part of a matrimony and a culture of care, focusing on bodies as well as on buildings and the environment, in their vernacular dimension. Both trained architects, Moroccans Salima Naji and Amina Agueznay each strive to rehabilitate locally sourced materials and know-how: raw earth as an alternative to concrete for the former while Draâ x Draâ, a textile and video installation, the result of a collaboration initiated by Agueznay with a master weaver, makes their shared experiences visible.
