The exhibition

From November 23, 2022 to June 4, 2023, the Arab World Institute and the Foundation for the Development of Art and Culture of the Republic of Uzbekistan present an exhibition-event on the heritage and ancestral skills of Uzbekistan from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, through a series of unique works exhibited for the first time outside national museums.
"In the white and vaporous light of dreams, on the borders of Europe and Asia, Uzbekistan emerges," wrote Jack Lang. The wonder of the president of the Arab World Institute is similar to that of Alexander the Great, the first of a line of invaders who discovered Bactria in 329 BC and founded twelve cities there. In the shadow and light of the IMA, large long coats in gold embroidered velvet, radiating like jewels from an uninterrupted vegetal pattern: the chapans. The Bukhara State Museum still preserves the coronation chapan of Mohamed Alim Khan, the last emir to reign before his deposition by the Soviets in 1920. As for the vibrant ikats, these colorful fabrics with blurred patterns of women's chapans, they inspire today Dries Van Noten or Ralph Lauren.
