Lena Vandrey. Insomnia.
The exhibition
Lena Vandrey at the Facteur Cheval
Who would doubt the relevance of showing the works of Lena Vandrey, born in 1941 in Breslau (Germany), at the Palais idéal? Like the Postman, she is a builder and has built the ramparts of his cloister of ruins. And just as he built a funeral chapel in the winter of his life, to rest forever in his work, she has blurred the boundaries between place of living and creation with her house-museum in Bourg-Saint-Andéol. "Since nature provides the sculpture, I will become an architect and a mason", professed the one whose palace is entirely made of stones picked up, chosen, then welded by cement. As for Lena, she "dresses her characters with what others have thrown away" and proceeds by assembling discarded elements, found here and there in second-hand shops. Self-taught and solitary, both represent hybrid, fantastical creatures - androgynous "angels" for Lena Vandrey. Finally, her sleepless nights translate a similar relentlessness to that of the legendary master of Hauterives.
