New permanent exhibition for the Museum of Modern Art in Paris

The Museum of Modern Art in Paris is proposing a new permanent exhibition, free and open to all art lovers. It has recently acquired an important donation of works that have been added to an already substantial collection, including Delaunay, Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Freundlich, Rouault, Vuillard...

This is the richness of the MAM: it is alive and well and is constantly adding to its collections, with acquisitions and bequests that are in constant flux. Works that are unfortunately too rarely exhibited are thus installed between the flagship and emblematic paintings that make up the richness of the museum. For the exhibition "Des corps, des écritures. A look at today's art", the display presents works created by contemporary artists between 1973 and 2022. The exhibition refers both to writing as a form of expression, but also to the body in the face of societal constraints, such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Esther Ferrer's photographs (1937) are displayed alongside Özgür Kar's sound and visual installations (1992), presenting heterogeneous objects but with a common discourse: to make us wonder about our freedom and our relationship to intimacy.
Then, a stroll between several thematic rooms of the history of art (such as "Abstractions" or "Fauves, post-impressionists and other colorists") mixes with monographic rooms dedicated to artists such as Jean-Michel Meurice (1938). Françoise Marquet-Zao - president of the Zao Wou-Ki Foundation - bequeathed works by Meurice to the MAM in 2022 in memory of his friendship with the Chinese artist Zao Wou-ki (1920-2013). The purpose of this donation is to show the evolution of Meurice's pictorial career since the late 1960s. Visitors can admire several of his canvases made of cut vinyl fabrics reproducing motifs from the Navajo culture, but also his variations on canvas - particularly those with the repetition of thin bands of bright colors drawn with a ruler. One of the works presented is characteristic of his work from the 1980s: he enjoyed incorporating the plant motif by using plants as stencils. This new acquisition explores in an innovative and surprising way the current trends of artists in the contemporary art scene.
