Born in Iran, Sissi Farassat moved to Vienna with her family, where she still lives today. A graduate of the International Summer Academy and the School of Fine Art in Vienna, she also studied photography with Friedl Kubelka. Creating self-portraits or photographing her loved ones, she subverts the instantaneous nature of the medium by incorporating sequins, beads, threads, and holes into her images. Through this time-consuming and meticulous work, her photographs attain the status of unique artworks. Taken out of the domestic sphere, the practice of embroidery becomes a starting point for reflection on the condition of women. It is also a way for her to reconnect with the past, as she shared with Harper’s Bazaar: embroidery indeed reminds her of her ‘wonderful childhood in Iran in the city of Isfahan,’ when her father would ‘tell her stories of women who worked on a carpet their entire lives.’
