Sarah Lucas, a British artist known for her provocative installations, sculptures, and photographs, is part of the Young British Artists (YBAs) group, made famous by the Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy in London in 1997. In the late 1980s, Sarah Lucas moved away from a formalist approach to sculpture when she discovered feminist theories. She then created subversive works, with a raw and direct language, that expose sexism and gender stereotypes by blending established artistic references with blunt allusions to popular culture. Among her notable works is Bitch (1995), an installation using a table, a T-shirt, melons, and a vacuum-packed smoked fish, which combines the misogynistic culture of tabloids with the ready-to-wear economy. Sarah Lucas is also famous for her confrontational self-portraits, such as Human Toilet Revisited (1998), a photograph in which she is seen sitting on a toilet, smoking a cigarette. The morbidity and provocative nature of her work have often been compared to those of Francis Bacon and Damien Hirst.
