Jean Daret
1614 (Bruxelles) / 1668 (Aix-en-Provence )
Jean Daret was rediscovered by the general public when an exhibition on painting in Provence in the 17th century was held in Marseille in 1978. He worked for some of the most important patrons of his time, including King Louis XIV and the Governor of Provence.
Although many of his works can be seen in museums in France and abroad (the United States and Russia), as well as in numerous churches and cathedrals in Provence, and in private mansions in Aix-en-Provence (the hôtels de Châteaurenard and Maurel de Pontevès), Jean Daret remains little known to the general public, and his large-scale work deserves to be honoured.
