Zao Wou-Ki was born in Beijing in February 1920: the 13th according to Chinese documents; the 1st according to his French naturalization certificate.
A few months later, his family moved to Shanghai.
He belonged to the T'chao family, which dated back to the Song dynasty.
On his arrival in France, T'chao Wou-Ki became Zao Wou-Ki (Wou-Ki being his first name).
He spent his childhood in Nantong, a small town north of Shanghai, where his father was a banker. He completed his primary education there, then attended the first three years of secondary school.
