If he says he draws his inspiration from apocalyptic works such as Ballard's Crash or Burroughs' Scarlet Nights, Bernard Joisten - who went back to painting after having multiplied installations in the 1990s - owes just as much to cinema and fashion photography. Or even more. With an almost electric perfection that is reminiscent of certain pop works (Rosenquist and David Hockney in particular), his paintings cultivate erotic images, amusement park decorum (one thinks of Hitchcock), muscular architecture and infernal machines.
