Edward Burtynsky makes photographs that explore the impact of humanity and civilization on the natural landscape. He says he wants his photography to be "an immersive experience where people say they are part of the work but don't have to like it. He says he wants to create this tension, "to have them drawn in and at the same time pushed away to show them the dilemma we are in. He goes on to say, "I try to access a universal resonance through my work" which he has often felt about photography as a visual language that would cross the barriers of words. Edward Burtynsky is an environmentalist revolted by the near-destruction of the world around him. Through his photography, he illustrates places that are often unknown to us, destroyed by civilizations but with a new beauty that is no longer natural.
