Recognized Polish sculptor, Alina Szapocznikow (pronounced “Cha-pot-chni-kof”) settled permanently in the capital in 1963 and then in Malakoff. A friend of César, she became friends with Annette Messager, Christian Boltanski, the Panique group (Roland Topor and Fernando Arrabal) and the art critic Pierre Restany, who invited her to participate in the exhibitions he organized in France and Italy. . At the time, when on the one hand figuration in the New Realists represents the body in its stereotyped and anonymous dimension to denounce its objectification, and when on the other hand the dominant abstraction is transformed into a minimalist trend, Szapocznikow calls into question sculpture (volume, balance and light) and the academic learning received in Prague, starting from his own body.
