Birth daughter of a linen maid who moved to Paris, raised by the nuns and a circus acrobat until a fall forced her to stop, Valadon did not follow any of her mentors: not Puvis de Chavannes, who admired the pertinence of her remarks; not Degas, who encouraged her to draw; or Toulouse-Lautrec, who changed her first name - model and mistress of these illustrious painters, she reminded him of the biblical story of Suzanne and the old men. She painted and perfected her skills as a self-taught artist.
