Born in Ghana, son of an Ewé weaver producing traditional loincloths (kenté), and trained in ceramics and pottery techniques before going to teach at the University of Nsukka in Nigeria in 1975, El Anatsui knows where he is going because he knows where he comes from. Emerging from the practice of recycling and object hijacking, his sublime and derisory hangings of crushed capsules and cans, like his fire-marked wood carvings, transform the global trade that is bleeding the African continent into huge oriflammes of fire and blood, where beauty rhymes with destruction.
