Having worked as a carpenter in the 1940s, Joe Tilson (b. 1928) jumped on the Pop bandwagon. In the early 1960s, the archaic vein of his experiments linked to printmaking encountered new possibilities for political activism. Disillusioned with Pop, Tilson settled in the Wiltshire countryside in 1972, where his work developed around symbolism with a universal vocation, from preclassical Greece to Vedic India, with this permanent concern for the work of hand, which frames his compositions in volume.
