"Why paint a portrait? For whom? And what is the point?" This is the critical method that, since 1971, has animated Susan Meiselas' approach. From her first series in the American heartland to her photos of the Sandinista revolution or the Kurdish genocide published in the international press, Meiselas has constantly redefined the precepts of documentary and photojournalism. To reverse the relationship of authority that is supposed to bind a photographer to his or her subject - and to give the latter its rightful place. And to criticize the mode of diffusion of the images by the media.
