Leader of the Barbizon School, Charles-François Daubigny was one of the best-known French painters in Europe at the time, his vogue reaching Great Britain and Holland, and even the United States. In contact with Monet, the technique of this open air master evolved towards a new freedom of touch. While critics first mentioned the word "impression" in connection with his schematic canvases of the 1850s, the works he exhibited at the Salon appeared to be less and less finished, and the debt of Monet's threatening skies or Pissaro's blossoming orchards to Daubigny seems to have been established.
