But who is Lyonel Feininger? Above all, he was a prolix and virtuoso draughtsman who explored all forms of plastic expression - pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolour, but also printmaking, lithography, etching and woodcuts - as in the dazzling series produced between 1918 and 1922 at the Bauhaus. One of his works, Cathedral, adorns the cover of the manifesto of the state art school that Walter Gropius created in 1919 in Weimar, the federal capital of the post-war Republic.
