Maurice Quentin de la Tour

1704 (Saint-Quentin) / 1788 (Saint-Quentin)

For the famous pastelist painter, the portrait represented for him a real fascination. "Portraits of aristocrats, musicians, singers and dancers, actors, men of letters and philosophers, men of the church and the royal family are represented with equal sensitivity. The master once confided to one of his friends about his models, "They think I only capture the features of their faces, but I go down deep inside them without their knowledge and I take them all in."
Bertrand Dumas, Art Absolument n°21, June 2007
