The exhibition

We know that young figurative painting is on a roll, and that the art market is playing a particularly important role in this dynamic. And in the spring of 2023, two museum exhibitions reflected this craze, although they were no doubt lacking in comprehensiveness: one at the MO.CO in Montpellier brought together one or two works by no fewer than 122 artists, while the other, launched in Les Sables d'Olonne, moved to Rémy-de-Provence this summer before Dôle in the autumn. But the exhibition at the Maison Caillebotte in Yerres owes a debt of gratitude to Guy Boyer, who is also editor-in-chief of Connaissances des Arts, for having narrowed down the selection to young artists, and even more so for having placed this focus on the figure within a longer history. The curator follows this parallel path to the narratives that still run through the notion of the avant-garde, by focusing on works that are sometimes little-known - the effect of having been shunned or even kept out of the spotlight by institutions more inclined towards 'historical' trends.
