Théodule Ribot. Une délicieuse obscurité
The exhibition
Black Realism of Ribot
An intellectual painter, Ribot finally achieved recognition under the parliamentary republic which, confessing its incompetence and fearing to commit a blunder, bought without experienced criteria for the province and even commissioned him, in 1888 (with Vollon), to paint the door-tops for the rebuilt town hall. Thus it happened that, in many regions, the visitor stopped in front of one of his paintings, hung in the margin, with the impression of a revelation as crucial as that of Georges de la Tour by Charles Sterling; after Toulouse, this should not happen anymore.
