"He is not an abstract painter because he reproduced nature, either by minifying it or magnifying it," says Dr. Champlain-Charest, that crucial friend who came into Riopelle's life in 1968. While still living in France, Riopelle returned once or twice a year to hunt and fish with this nomadic friend who shared his passions. In 1974, Riopelle built himself a studio near Champlain's home in Estérel, in the Laurentians, and the two became members of the private (and highly prized) hunting club on Ile aux Oies, one of the 21 islands in the vast archipelago of Ile aux Grues in the fleuve Saint-Laurent: "Something about this place surpasses reality and gives rise to another life, larger than life, without limits."
