Unpopular for being too popular, Jean-Léon Gérôme suffered the opprobrium of being the last of the firemen in the 20th century. Much better than Cabanel, his neo-Greek, historical and Orientalist art nevertheless heralds the decadent aesthetic and anticipates Hollywood cinema.
