"Hyperrealism means making photography into painting, which does not interest me. To make a hyperrealist painting is to remain absolutely in the tracing, while to make a painting from a photograph is to be a painter and that is something else. What interests me is to paint like the ancients, that is to say to transmute the object and to give it life. To give life to the flatness, it is not nothing because it is necessary to be always out of the anecdote. This is the secret of painting for me. When you give life to what you do, a life that lives on its own substance, everything that is anecdotal is then evacuated."
